About Kanungu District “ Western Uganda's Green Tea Belt and Gorilla Gateway in the Kigezi Highlands

Kanungu District spreads across the mist-draped ridges of the Kigezi Sub-Region, straddling Uganda's south-western borderland with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Carved out of Rukungiri in 2001, the district headquarters in Kanungu Town sit roughly 60 km west of Kabale and 500 km from Kampala, anchoring trade between the Albertine Rift and the Virunga flank of the Great Lakes.

Geographically, Kanungu combines steep terraced hills, deep river valleys and fragments of mid-elevation rainforest. To the west, the district merges into the montane canopy of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to nearly half of the world's mountain-gorilla population. To the east it borders Rukungiri, while Kabale lies to the south-east and DR Congo forms the rugged south-western frontier. Annual rainfall often exceeds 1 400 mm, feeding the Ishasha and Ntungwa rivers and sustaining an emerald patchwork of tea estates and banana gardens.

Administratively, Kanungu is organised into 17 rural sub-counties and two town councils, subdivided into 72 parishes and 503 villages. Key sub-counties such as Kihihi, Nyamirama, Katete, Rugyeyo, Nyakishenyi, Butogota and Kirima give local councils reach into every valley and forest-edge hamlet, while Kanungu and Kihihi Town Councils manage fast-growing trading centres that host tea factories, tourism lodges and cross-border produce markets.

Education is a cornerstone for the district's 280 000-plus residents. The network includes 59 nursery schools, 240 primary schools, 45 secondary schools, two BTVET institutes, one tertiary college and a teachers' college”a total of 349 registered institutions. Although enrolment is high, hilly terrain means some pupils still trek long distances; science labs and ICT resources remain limited outside Kihihi and Kanungu towns.

Economically, Kanungu thrives on a triad of tea, bananas and tourism.

• Tea estates in Rugyeyo, Butogota and Katete employ thousands and export through the Mombasa auction.
• Food crops”matooke, beans, Irish potatoes, sorghum”blanket terrace farms, while smallholder coffee, passion-fruit and honey enterprises diversify incomes.
• Tourism centred on Bwindi Impenetrable National Park's gorilla-tracking and birding circuits pumps foreign exchange into community lodges, craft stalls and guide cooperatives.

Yet the district faces key challenges: feeder-road erosion on steep slopes, fluctuating tea prices, human“wildlife conflict along Bwindi's boundary, and scattered rural electricity coverage.

Infrastructure has improved but remains a development priority. The Rukungiri“Kanungu“Kihihi tarmac has cut travel time to Kabale by half, but many parish roads turn muddy in the heavy March“May rains. Grid power from the Ishasha mini-hydro reaches tea factories and towns; the rest rely on solar kits. Gravity-flow schemes and protected springs supply water, though dry-season shortages linger in Nyamirama and Bwindi ridge villages.

Governance is led by an elected District Chairperson, a Resident District Commissioner (RDC) and a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), with sub-county councils implementing Uganda's Parish Development Model. Three Members of Parliament”Kanungu Woman MP, Kinkizi West MP, and Kinkizi East MP”advocate road funds, tourism revenue sharing and tea-seedling subsidies at national level.

In summary, Kanungu District blends dramatic Kigezi landscapes, a robust tea economy and world-renowned gorilla tourism to position itself as a high-value eco-agricultural hub in Western Uganda. Continued investment in feeder roads, rural electrification, ICT-equipped classrooms and human“wildlife coexistence projects will help ensure that Kanungu's vibrant farming communities and conservation stewards share fully in the district's green prosperity.
