Kamuli District “ A Vibrant Agricultural District in Uganda's Busoga Sub-Region
Kamuli District occupies the north-eastern reaches of the Busoga Sub-Region in Eastern Uganda, flanked by quiet stretches of the Victoria Nile and fertile Lake Kyoga wetlands. Its headquarters in Kamuli Town anchor trade between Jinja, Buyende and Kayunga, while feeder roads weave through sugarcane plains, banana groves and bustling weekly markets.
Geographically, Kamuli shares borders with Buyende to the north, Kaliro to the east, Luuka and Jinja to the south, and Kayunga across the Nile to the west. Low, rolling ridges frame broad alluvial valleys whose deep loams and plentiful water table sustain year-round food and cash-crop farming.
Administratively, the district is divided into fourteen sub-counties, eighty-five parishes and seven hundred fifty-six villages. Core sub-counties such as Bugulumbya, Nawanyago, Wankole, Namasagali, Kagumba and Balawoli deliver services to a rapidly growing rural population, supported by Kamuli and Buwenge Town Councils.
Education is a cornerstone of local development. Kamuli hosts 35 nursery schools, 213 primary schools, 33 secondary schools and one tertiary college, nurturing the region's future farmers, teachers, entrepreneurs and civil servants. Although enrolment is strong, many rural schools still grapple with limited science laboratories, insufficient instructional materials and the need for greater ICT access.
The district's economy is firmly rooted in smallholder agriculture. Farmers cultivate sugarcane, maize, rice, beans, groundnuts, cassava, sweet potatoes and bananas, while a patchwork of wetlands supports fish farming and papyrus harvesting. Robusta coffee and sunflower offer cash income, and livestock”particularly dairy cattle and goats”supplement household livelihoods. Periodic produce auctions in Namasagali, Kasambira and Butansi connect small farmers to Jinja's urban markets.
Infrastructure continues to improve but remains a priority challenge. The tarmac Jinja“Kamuli road guarantees all-weather access to the district hub, yet many interior feeder routes become muddy and impassable during heavy rains. Rural electrification now reaches every sub-county headquarters, but large pockets of homesteads rely on solar lanterns or kerosene. Boreholes, shallow wells and protected springs provide water, though dry-season shortages persist in higher-elevation villages.
Governance is overseen by an elected District Chairperson, a Resident District Commissioner and a Chief Administrative Officer. Local councils mobilise communities for government programmes, while Members of Parliament for Kamuli North, Kamuli Municipality and Kamuli Woman Representative advocate for road funds, health-centre upgrades and youth-skills projects at national level.

In Kamuli District UCE 2020 Examinations Results, Emirates SS, Kamuli emerged the top secondary school with 33.82% pass rate from 68 candidates who sat the exams. The second place with 33.82% pass rate is Busoga High School. Central College, Kamuli took position 3 to seal the top three best schools in Kamuli district in the just concluded 2020 Uganda Certificate of Education UCE exams.
