The Ministry of Education under Uganda Teacher and School Effectiveness Project (UTSEP) with support from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and Aga Khan Foundation piloted a ReadingTo-Learn Methodology training for Primary 6 and 7 teachers at St. Aloysius Core Primary Teachers College (CPTC), Ngora District, Teso sub-region in Eastern Uganda. KAWA team led the training in the area of 21st Century skills and application of technology in the classroom.
The target group that attended the training were primary 6 and 7 teachers from Soroti district. The local language used is Ateso.
Reading-to-Learn (RtL) is a systematic (step by step) stet of strategies that enable teachers to support all the pupils in their classes to read and write at the levels they need to succeed. This methodology will improve the quality of learning outcomes under Universal Primary Education (UPE)
The rationale of the training
The gist of the training was to orient P.6 and P.7 teachers on the implementation of RtL Methodology. RtL is designed to help pupils to unlock meaning from text when they transit from thematic curriculum to studying subjects. The training prepared participants to have a positive mindset attitude towards the implementation of RtL in their respective primary schools.
